Pretty patterned stone named Wave Dolomite, or Rolling Hills Dolomite.

Sometimes also called Wavy Dolomite.

Because of its interesting patterns, Wave Dolomite is believed to be a stromatolite fossil or a fossil of algae.

Stromatolites are the oldest known fossils, dating back more than 3 billion years. Basically Stomatolites are prokaryotes (cyanobacteria-sort of an ancient cousin to algae) that thrived in warm aquatic environments and built reefs much the same way as coral does today. They are the oldest living organisms on the planet, and are believed to be the first living organisms on Earth.

Dolomite is a sedimentary carbonate rock, similar to calcite but with magnesium as an added element.

Dolomite is found all over the world. It is both a mineral and a rock. The mineral is the pure form, and Dolomite rock is composed mostly of Dolomite but also with impurities such as Calcite, Quartz, and Feldspar.

It is named for the French mineralogist, Deodat de Dolomieu.

Dolomite is a fairly soft stone-about a 3.5 to a 4, so care should be taken when setting, wearing or cleaning your designer cabochon.
