Obsidian is a natural volcanic glass. It is a glassy, lustrous gemstone and it is found in lava flows. Obsidian is produced when lava cools so quickly that no crystals can form.
Spiderweb Obsidian was recently discovered in Guadalajara, Mexico. Only a small amount of rough is coming out! The designer cabochons are a lovely midnight or very dark blue with sky blue "webbing". It is so reflective it is very hard to photograph!
Obsidian was important to many ancient cultures. It was one of the major barter materials, and has been used since prehistoric times for making tools, masks, weapons, mirrors and jewelry. Obsidian was named after a Roman- Obsius, who reportedly discovered it.
Obsidian has a hardness of 5 to 5.5.
