It has a lovely chevron pattern of layered white Quartz and purple Amethyst.
Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz and is a popular gemstone both faceted or in cabochon stones.
Amethyst gets its color from gamma irradiation and the presence of traces of iron built into its crystal lattices. Rarely is the color in Amethyst even, and in Chevron Amethyst the crystals actually are formed with chevron or V shaped bands of alternating purple and white.
These are natural crystals from Zambia in southern Africa. One of the largest global amethyst producers is Zambia, with an annual production of about 1000 tons.
The name Amethyst comes from the Greek and means "not drunken." This was maybe due to a belief that Amethyst would ward off the effects of alcohol, but most likely the Greeks were referring to the almost wine-like color of some stones that they may have encountered.
Amethyst can occur as long prismatic crystals that have a six sided pyramid at either end or can form as druses that are crystalline crusts that only show the pointed terminations.
Amethyst is the birth stone for February.
Purple is the color of royalty, and has been worn by kings and queens throughout history. In fact, in Roman times generals and emperors wore a purple cape with gold embroidery.
Amethyst was also important to the Catholic church and Bishops wear Amethyst rings.
