These loose stones weigh approximately 8.5 carats each.
This colorful striped semiprecious stone is Candy Opal and it is found in western Utah, in the Thomas Mountain Range near the city of Milford.
It is also known as Bacon Opal, Bubble Opal, Halite Opal, Lace Opal and Wildfire Opal.
The name Opal comes from the Latin word opalus which means "precious stone".
Opal that is mostly opaque, with no play of color, is actually quite common. Opal is a hydrated silica material and it has a hardness of 5.5 to 6.5.
